Operating out of an abandoned firehouse in Chicago's Back of the Yards, Plant Chicago (PC) is the city center for circular economy. PC's goal is to equip people and businesses in this lower-income neighborhood and beyond with the tools to live more sustainably. They offer community-driven, hands-on programs and innovative research projects at low- to no-cost, including an indoor victory garden, small business support, solar outreach, and more.
As a summer intern, I supported community education and operations at their weekly farmer's markets. During my time, I was able to create:
· A financial and metric-tracking system aligned with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits
· A support system for local vendors while navigating new financial tracking, underwhelming market attendance, and pandemic-related issues
· An educational experience for market attendees on the circular economy and urban agricultural practices occurring on site
